Saginaw, Okemos, and Port Huron students continued their winning ways in the 2021 Flint Regional Science & Engineering Fair, held virtually for the second consecutive year. The results from this year’s Senior Division event were announced Wednesday evening in a YouTube presentation. Top honors, including a share of more than $10,000 in cash and scholarships were awarded to:
1st Place – $5,000 ($500 cash and $4,500 scholarship), entry into the International Science and Engineering Fair, and a four-year scholarship to the University of Michigan-Flint:
Katie McCarthy, 12th grade, Saginaw Arts and Sciences Academy, for her project: The Great Lakes Nonmetal Concentrations: Potential Causes of Harmful Algal Blooms
- ISEF: 4th Award ($500) in EARTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES, sponsored by National Geographic Society
2nd Place – $2,500 ($500 cash and $2,000 scholarship), entry into the International Science and Engineering Fair, and a four year scholarship to the University of Michigan-Flint:
Serena Ahmed, 12th grade, Saginaw Arts and Sciences Academy, for her project: The Physiological Effects of Turmeric and Ginger on Oxidative Stress in Caernorhabditis elegans
3rd Place– $2,000 ($500 cash and $1,500 scholarship), entry into the International Science and Engineering Fair, and a four year scholarship to the University of Michigan-Flint:
Ayan Nair, 10th grade, Okemos High School, for his project: Smartphone Capable Lightweight Convolutional Neural Network Model for Detecting COVID-19 in Chest X-rays: Addressing the need of Resource-strapped Locations
4th Place – $1,000 ($500 cash and $500 scholarship), and entry into the International Science and Engineering Fair:
Sinan Lal, 11th grade, Port Huron Northern High School, for the project: Lung Segmentation in Chest X-rays with Res-CR-Net
- ISEF: 3rd Award ($1000) in ROBOTICS AND INTELLIGENT MACHINES, sponsored by Siegel Family Endowment
Joining these four as an ISEF alternate is Arohi Nair, 10th grader, Okemos High School, for her project: Radiomic Classification of Chest Radiographs – Identifying COVID-19, Viral Pneumonia, and Healthy Patients to Alleviate Hospital Congestion.
The top thirty finalists earned cash awards ranging from $100 – $500. Numerous Special Awards were also awarded by various local, regional, and national organizations. Special Awards recognition can range from certificates to gift packages to summer camp programs to college scholarships.
The Flint Regional Science & Engineering Fair (FRSEF) is administered by Flint Science Fair, Inc., a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. The FRSEF partners with the greater community of Mid-Michigan to foster student potential by: hosting an annual regional science and engineering fair; offering educational experiences; extending opportunities for rewards, recognition, and additional competitions; and providing outreach services to students and all who support them.
Now into its sixth decade of service,FRSEF continues to inspire and empower curiosity, investigation, and understanding through empowering science and engineering.
