Recognition
Finalists
Students who develop top quality projects are designated “Finalists” and are awarded formal prizes and scholarships based on their ranking within division and category. Finalists from the senior division are nominated to participate in the Michigan Science and Engineering Fair.
Senior Division Top Prizes
International Science and Engineer Fair (ISEF)
The top two senior division winners are awarded an all expense paid trip to compete in the prestigious International Science and Engineering Fair ISEF (Flint ISEF info). Two outstanding freshman or sophomore finalists are awarded a trip to the ISEF as observers. Nearly $4,000,000 in prizes and scholarships was awarded at the 2008 ISEF.
SSP Middle School Program
Each year FASF is able to nominate up to 10% of the 5th through 8th graders to apply for the SSP Middle School Program (formerly Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge) in Washington, DC. 400 Semifinalists are identified from which 40 students are selected from across the USA to participate in this very special event. FASF is proud that 11 Semifinalists and 4 Finalists from our fair have been selected over the last 5 years.
Special Awards
Many local and national government, scientific, technical and business organizations support our fair by making special awards (spec award sponsor list) to projects of their choosing. While most special awards are presented to finalists, some are presented to non-finalists whose projects are of special interest to the sponsor. Special awards range from recognition certificates and plaques, scholarships to special summer programs, cash awards, equipment, reference books, magazine subscriptions, etc.
